There is a statue in Savannah known as the "Waving Lady". The story surrounding the statute, tells of Florence Martus, a young woman who waved at ships along the river for 44 years. There is speculation that the reason she carried this tradition was because of a sailor whom she fell in love with who never returned. She waved her handkerchief during the day and a lantern at night. It is said that she greeted over 50,000 ships in her lifetime.
